Iron Pour 2019

An exciting event WITH MOLTEN HOT IRON

In 2019 the Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts coordinated a first-time-ever Iron Pour for the City of Kingsport. They realized there was no better place to have this premier event than at the newly-opened makerspace, The Inventor Center!

Creating the Scratch Molds

CARVED FROM SAND

Leading up to the Iron Pouring event itself, the Inventor Center had several mold scratching days. Participants that had registered with the Office of Cultural Arts were able to come to our space and scratch their design out of a block of sand. Sand withstands the extreme temperatures while keeping its form until the iron cools and is pulled away from the block.

The Experts Arrive

AND THINGS HEAT UP

A group of artists from all over the country drove to Kingsport to lead the iron pour. These experts handled the materials and poured the iron into the molds made by our Kingsport residents. They also had a few molds of their own that we got to watch them fill! With music, food, and good company, this was a fun day that we hope to repeat next year!
