Little Libraries for Our Neighborhoods

MAKING KNOWLEDGE ACCESSIBLE

The City of Kingsport Neighborhood Commission approached the Inventor Center seeking help with a special project. To improve our neighborhoods and encourage reading, they proposed creating “Little Libraries”. These are small structures that are placed outside and hold a small number of books. Anyone who walks past can open the Library, choose a book to read, and borrow it. The book can be returned to the same Little Library, or another in a close neighborhood. Books can also be donated to add variety to the available literature.

Building the Structures

FROM PROTOTYPING TO COMPLETION

Fred took the project on and began prototyping. He wanted to make sure the Little Libraries were sturdy and would stand up to different types of weather for years to come. After getting a design in place, he created 10 structures to be shared with the Neighborhood Commission. The Commission then painted each Library to their own liking, creating unique designs for each one.

Final Touches

GRAB A BOOK

You can now see these Little Libraries scattered throughout Kingsport, inviting passerbys to take a book and read something new. We were proud to be part of this community project and hope to do more in the future!
