Intermediate Bladesmithing: Sloyd Carving Knife

Forge your own sloyd style carving knife and learn about blacksmithing along the way!

Prerequisite: beginner blacksmithing/bladesmithing workshop OR prior blacksmithing experience.

In this class, students will forge their own sloyd style carving knife, learn to block temper, shape and finish a wooden handle, and pour a pewter bolster, then grind and sharpen their knife. We will also cover some blacksmithing history, tooling information, and other basic concepts and more advanced concepts. We will further discuss working with high carbon steels, hammering to shape, edge geometry, and proper thermo cycling and heat treating. By the end of class, students will leave with a finished carving knife.

Age 18+

Please wear cotton or non synthetic clothes that you don't mind getting very dirty, full-length pants, and close-toed shoes.

Note: This is a slightly more physically intensive class than hair stick or seahorse knife. Bring water and be ready to really swing a hammer.
